Tshirts!

In an effort to regain a bit of my manhood after the disaster that was my sister’s wedding (I still have nightmares), I have decided to dedicate this post to the core staple of any self respecting mans wardrobe, the t-shirt.

That’s right my friends, a good t-shirt can take you a long way. You can go from day to night, or even bed to night if the mood so strikes.

I can clearly remember when my love affair with the t-shirt first began. It was early on in my young life when I realized the beauty that can only be found in a nice cotton blend. In fact, I have just 2 words for you, Optimus Prime. Oh yeah! As my mother wheeled my 5-year-old self through the store my little eyes latched on to the promise land and it was done in red and blue. I begged, I pleaded, (okay I threw an out and out fit) but I ended up with the shirt and I proceeded to wear it every day. I even went so far as to sit in front of the washer and dryer in protest when my mother had the audacity to wrestle it from my filthy body and order that we both be washed.

Then one day I came home to find my mother sitting at the kitchen table with a surprise. She covered my eyes and led me into my room. And there on my bed was the next best thing to Christmas morning. Somehow she had found a whole rainbow of shirts for me to try. We had GI Joe, He-Man, Scooby Doo, and the Smurfs just to name a few. There was even a brand new Transformers shirt that spotlighted the whole gang.

As I stood there in amazement I started to realize that I had choices. With so many fun and amazing choices out there, why in the world would I limit myself to just one? Right then and there I stripped off my old transformers shirt and started working my way through my new friends. I now had a new choice ready and waiting for each and every day of the week. And on a good day, I could even get my shirt and my undies to match. Oh yeah, I was a stylin’ dude. (By the way, Mom was doing the happy dance around the room that her plan had worked.)

But don’t think that it stopped there. As I grew so did my love affair with the t-shirt. I moved from Saturday morning cartoons to sports teams during junior high. I am, (and always have been and always will be!) a die-hard Cowboys fan. This meant that the height of my junior high wardrobe revolved around blue and white. It also meant that anyone dumb enough to wear another set of colors on their sleeve instantly drew a line in the little league sand. Friends and enemies were instantly made due to the team they endorsed. Who knew that a shirt could ever say so much?

At this point you can probably guess what came next. Yup. Bands! By the time high school rolled around I had definitely developed some very particular tastes in music, and I loved nothing more than to wear it on my chest.

Now, that I’m older, (and I like to think a bit more
refined) my taste has changed yet again. At this point I like to have a bit of fun with things. You know, keep people guessing. One day I might wear a lovely 1980’s pink panther classic, and then I might follow it up with a John Deere green farmers special. You never know! But the beauty of either of these options is that you have but to through on a decent jacket and you are ready for a night on the town.

So my friends embrace your love of the t-shirt. Own it. Wear it. Make it the defining feature of who you are as a person. (Okay, that might be a bit much.) But you get the gist. A good t-shirt can take you a long ways. It’s easy to wash, easy to pack, and easy to fill with amazing memories.

Oh, and that old transformers shirt? I still have it. I am waiting for the day when I can introduce my own child to my passion. They might not understand who the transformers are, but they will understand the point…..at least I think that they will! On to the next adventure, I think I am in the mood for some great music.

For now I am going to kick back and watch my favorite sport FOOTBALL!
